About the Club The FLLC Story In the beginning, dues were $25, refs $10/game, and the good, the bad and the ugly with a stick got PT. And, you could roll a keg onto any field, any park in the region. Those were the days, 1975. As founding president, I can attest that most of following ancient history is true.
But, to get to the beginning, we need to roll back time for background. In '73 after a couple of years in Ft. Lauderdale, I got the bug to play again. Last time I played was with the Orange County LC in CA in '70. First I tried to get a club going with students at Ft. Lauderdale University, Yep, ask Fuchsie!
Gary was the only recruit because he could catch and throw since his big brother, Frank, played at the Naval Academy and would practice with him. Fuchs had never played an actual game.
Still, in need of players, I placed an ad in the Sun Sentinel. Got thirty calls. Out of the inquiries came such charter members as John Meiners, Ken Buchsbaum, Kevin Sullivan, Howard Anderson to name a few. From the contacts, I forget who, it was mentioned that there was a club starting up in Miami, run by Eric Rudolph. Since, I hadn't got to the part of the plan as to who "our" club would play, this was a godsend. Or should I say "Gift from the Creator!"
Eric and his group were way ahead of us. He was in touch with five other clubs around the state, ready to play. And he had equipment on order and money. However, he only had 10 players or so. And so the hook up, and I brought 12 players to the roster of the Miami LC. That spring the inaugural season of the Florida Lacrosse League commenced with UM, FIU, USF, MLC, OLC, and JAX(?).
Fast forward to '75! After two tough seasons with MLC (the college clubs whupped us good), they built up the roster, and FLLC spun off. It took four seasons for FLLC to win it's first league championship, beating JAX in '79. And the rest is history.
